My Book Is Finished!

I finished it!  A labor-of-love for all of you.  I have been working to distill down all I know about calming our bodies down and supporting our natural healing processes.  It is done!  My first book:  “Sexy, Lean and Strong After 50! — How I went from Fat, Depressed and Divorced to the Best Shape of My Life, and How You Can Too!”  It will be available on Amazon Kindle for download December 7, 2015.

I am sharing my concept of the Mad-Body Syndrome that puts you on your Mad-Body Mountain, and how it takes more than crash-diets or hours at the gym to get back to Sexy, Lean and Strong Valley.  Those of us of a certain age (mine is 63….) have to do a bit more soul-searching and self-analysis to get to the core reasons we are on the mountain in the first place.  My journey has lasted for over fourteen years and taken me through some amazing discoveries.

The first amazing discovery was that life does not end at divorce.  Life does not end when your only son dies suddenly or when you lose your home and livelihood.  Life does not end when your only daughter refuses to speak to you and your husband, lover and best friend of over thirty years cuts you off from all you know and love.  Life does not end when you are fat, depressed and want to die.  Life begins again and it is all about saying Yes! to getting off the mountain and reclaiming your vitality and energy.   Life is there for the taking and I want everyone to have it all!  Health, love, sex, energy and a joie-de-vivre, at Any Age, but, especially after 50!

My life began anew at 51, when all hell broke loose and all I had lived for and built was torn away from me.  Here is an excerpt from the book:

“Living alone for the first time in almost my entire life, at 51, was gut-wrenching.  I would try to find ways to calm myself and get to sleep.  I tried to eat but the though of food made me nauseous.  I could not even smell it…..Finally I was learning to take care of myself….I was trying to keep my ranch going, learning to date for the first time in over thirty years, selling the family home, and running my nutrition products business.  All at the same time, plus trying unsuccessfully to re-connect and build a relationship with my daughter.”

Exposing Dangers of Crazy Weight-Loss Supplements

Beware of Crazy Weight Loss Supplements – There May be Danger in those “Quick-Fixes”

It is coming up on the New Year – when lots of people decide it is time to lose weight.   There are so many products out there that claim they will help you lose weight and burn or block fat. Some of them work for the short-term, but what do they do to your body and how long can you use them? And why would you take a risk of some health issue due to their use?

In pursuit of a quick-fix, you can mess your body up pretty badly. Buying products off of commercials and infomercials can be a huge health hazard. One of my clients is a woman who purchased some weight-loss vitamins off a television commercial. They caused kidney failure. She now has one of her sister’s kidneys and is on a very restricted diet. And the meds she needs to use have caused her to put on over eighty pounds in two years. All because she wanted a quick-fix!

In a report from Consumer Labs, June 7, 2014, reviewing weight loss supplements, they list the various ingredients being used by quick weight-loss product companies. These are:

Bitter orange, calcium, chitosan, ephedra, green tea, 7-keto DHEA, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), green coffee bean extracts, hoodia, pyruvate and L-carnitine, chromium, raspberry ketones, herbal stimulant blends, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplements. What concerns me is not only the unregulated manufacture but the potential side-effects:

Specifically — Increase in blood pressure – in some products up to 11.8! Here are some of the readings:

Other products will increase heart rate or produce abnormal heart rhythms

Side effects shared by the above four products include: Nausea, insomnia , skin flushing, headache, frequent urination, loss of appetite, indigestion, tremors, anxiety.

So you risk a lot and they don’t even work that well!

Some of these you only want to do for a few days to a few weeks. With all the parties and munching, people put on weight during the holidays. I have a few tricks to keep my noshing down but still get to have tastes of my favorite foods. I grew up on ham, sparking apple cider, chex-mix, macaroni and cheese and all the home-y stuff my mom would make and serve at the holidays. Not to mention all the pies, cakes, candy and cookies!

Some of my tricks: Eat before an event – something small and healthy (protein shake, nutrition bar, handful of nuts, slice of chicken), and drink a glass of water. Then, I am not starving when I hit the door of the party.

Here is a new trick I just got from a great article in the December 2013 AARP Bulletin. Plan around 50 calorie bites! Of course, this means I can no longer compete with my family to drink the most Sparkling Cider at one sitting – my record: a 25.4 oz bottle in 10 minutes — or put down several ham slices with cheese, but at least I don’t have to lose all my favorite foods entirely. Here is the list and, if you keep it in mind, it may help you to Stay Lean through the Holidays.

The guideline is women can choose 18 of these servings for 900 calories, which would be about half their daily recommended caloric intake, and men can choose 22 for 1,100 calories. That way if you want three pieces of pumpkin pie, you can have it, but that means cutting-back somewhere else…..Or, you can just eat all you want for a few days and then do a Fast or Cleanse for a few after, beginning in the New Year. I will post about different types of safe fasts and cleanses in my next blog, sometime after the New Year, probably!

• Pigs in a blanket, appetizer-size: 1

 • Ham, canned: 1 medium slice

• Mashed potatoes: ¼ cup

• Turkey with skin: 1 medium slice

• Prime rib: 1 thin slice

• Stuffing: 1/8 cup

• Green bean casserole: ¼ cup

• Candied sweet potatoes: 1/6 cup

• Macaroni and cheese: 1/10 cup

• Gravy: 3 tablespoons

• Cranberry sauce: 1/8 cup

Beverages

• Eggnog, non-alcoolic: ¼ cup

• Eggnog, alcoholic: 1/8 cup

• Wine: 2 fluid oz.

• Beer: 4 fluid oz.
Apple cider
 • Apple cider: 3 fluid oz.

Desserts

 • Pumpkin pie: 1/6 of a slice

• Apple pie: 1/8 of a slice

• Pecan pie: 1/10 of a slice

So, now that you know these measurements, you can estimate the calories for each of your choices. Don’t feel too bad if the 50-calorie portions just don’t cut it. I have to agree! My choice, choose my three top favorites, eat as much of these foods/drinks as I want and cut-back elsewhere. And if I just can’t resist, there is always the Cleanse solution! Or, a bike-ride, run or a sauna…….

What a Hangover is Doing to Your Body

Gal with hangover 2A dear friend loves to party. She is just 27, and spends her free time at bars with buds. Her pictures are full of drinking and laughing. Unfortunately, her body is not so happy, inside.
Here is what is happening to your body on a Hangover, per Laura Bell in WomensHealth Magazine — Maybe it is not worth it????

Head: Your head is aching because you are dehydrated – because lots of alcohol upsets the production of vasopressin, a hormone that controls fluid balance – which is also why you will spend the night running to the restroom.

My suggestion: Drink a glass of water a half-hour before going to the event, then drink a glass of water between the drinks and drink water before you go to bed – Dilute the alcohol level and get it out of your body faster. Try to eat something as well – to help process the alcohol. You can take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, but no acetaminophen. Find out why next. If you drank darker hard liquors, and most beers and dark wines, there were more congeners, chemicals that may exacerbate the hangover. Plus, if you were smoking it will increase the pain.

Liver – Your poor liver has to spend all the time processing the alcohol, which is actually poisoning your body, so it is not processing food. It can only process and detox one drink per hour, so pace yourself! Do not add acetaminophen the next day as the liver is worn-out, drink water and take a liver-support system, with milk-thistle and alpha-lipoic acid. I take one tablet with every meal as my liver needs the support, and I rarely drink even wine.

Stomach – If you have a spiked drink of any kind, it will irritate your stomach and you might not be able to tolerate food. Again, drink water and let your stomach calm down. If you are nauseous, you are actually in alcohol-withdrawal . You could also be shaking, sweaty or feeling anxious. If you can do it, put a healthy, vegan protein smoothie with good herbs in your stomach. If you can’t, sip water and wait it out. All the home-remedies will not really change the chemical issues you are dealing with, unfortunately. You just have to let your body purge. You could try a sauna if you keep hydrated. Sweating out the poison is good!

Energy Level – Alcohol disturbs the brain’s normal sleep cycles, so any sleep you got was probably not very restorative. You probably feel groggy and muddle-headed. Put off decision-making until you feel better. Take a nap and meditate on how you can better handle the next party to not lose the next day! Once you have lost the nausea and headache, eat, rest and then do some light exercise — walk outside in the fresh air. This too shall pass…..

Why We need to Replace Probiotics Every Day!

A while back I blogged on the benefits of Probiotics and how I got rid of my IBS, bloating and other issues.  Now I have learned that we are being polluted and our probiotics killed-off, every day that we eat foods with glyphosate.  The EPA is allowing it in our foods and all GMO-foods are suspect.  I will never stop using my probiotic supplement, every day!  I took them with me on my recent 10-day trip to Virginia and Florida and they helped me stay healthy and kept the weight off!

“Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus faecalis—these are organisms that keep you healthy either by providing accessibility to the minerals in your food or producing many of the vitamins that you need for life. They’re also the natural biological defenses to keep Clostridium, Salmonella, and E.coli from developing in your system,” Dr. Huber explains.

“When you take the good bacteria out, then the bad bacteria fill that void, because there aren’t any voids in nature. Glyphosate was first patented as a chelator in 1964 by Stauffer Chemical Co. It was patented by Monsanto and introduced as an herbicide in 1974. And then in 1996, Roundup Ready crops hit the market. There’s been a steep increase in the usage of Roundup since then, because you can apply it multiple times without damaging your crop. Making matters worse, they’re now also using glyphosate as a ripening agent—even for non-GMO crops. It’s applied right before harvest time to ripen off the crop.

“We have about a five-fold increase in glyphosate usage on many of our GMO crops. With the Roundup Ready-resistant weeds, we see that rate going up exponentially,” he says.

Despite well-understood health risks, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is repeatedly approached by agricultural and biotech companies asking for increased limits of this pernicious toxin in your food.

“The companies say we have to increase the amount of glyphosate that we can have in your food, so we can have a ‘safe’ product – not based on science but based on how much chemical is actually in our food!” Dr.Huber says.

On May 1, the EPA went ahead and doubled the amount of glyphosate allowed in food… Soybean oil may now contain as much as 40 parts per million (ppm) of glyphosate. Meanwhile, research by Dr. Monika Krueger at Leipzig University shows that a tenth of a part per million is all that it takes to kill your Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Enterococcus faecalis! So soybean oil is now allowed to contain a whopping 4,000 times the known limit at which it can impact your health.”

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES?

Eat Clean, as close to the natural source as possible.  Buy from local farmers and find out what they do to keep glyphosate out of your foods.  Stay away from packaged and processed foods that do not have labeling which discloses GMO content.

Replenish the probiotics every day.  My choice – USANA Probiotics – a powder with12 Billion live bacteria with lactobacillus and bifidobacterium.  I cannot go without it!
